CREATIVE CURRENCY : gwendolynne & christopher tovo
A cultural archive project capturing the lived reality of Melbourne’s creative high achievers. Intimate, filmed conversations - peer to peer format - between inspiring creative forces in Melbourne. The project documents the ideas, sacrifices, DNA, family inter generational patterns that have shaped the city’s cultural landscape. Each episode moves beyond interview into process, collaboration and how creative careers are sustained over time.
Thrilled to have sat with photographer Christopher Tovo for Tripel Axel Creative "Creative Currency Podcast" & dive deep into the layers of what shapes us as seasoned creators.
This conversation was like opening an immense archive of Creative DNA. The inherited quirks, instincts & rituals quietly guiding our practices long before we ever call ourselves artists.
What struck me most was discovering how many parallels exist between our creative worlds even though we work in different mediums. The discipline behind the play. The integrity behind the edit. The moments where you have to say no to protect the soul of the work. The bravery
required to trust your instincts even when the path becomes uncertain or costly.
We spoke about mentors seen & unseen, inherited traits that become unexpected gifts & the parts of ourselves we have had to outgrow to stay true to our craft. We explored the quiet rituals that help us release a piece into the world & the unique Melbourne creative scene.
It was so invigorating to sit across from someone I had only briefly met who truly understands the emotional & practical complexities of making work with integrity and who has worked in a creative practice of equal decades.
I walked away feeling energised & grateful for the exchange. I cannot wait to share the episode soon & invite you into this conversation about creativity, courage & the currency we trade as artists.

Kate Miller-Heidke's Eurovision performance of 'Zero Gravity' is now legend. Featuring backup dancers mounted to flexible poles that swayed through the air, the performance literally and figuratively leant into Eurovision's breathtaking spectacle. Bringing that gravity-defying performance to life behind the scenes was the Fitzroy-based couturier, Gwendolynne Burkin.
Hear how Burkin was called in an 11th hour design marathon, to create Miller-Heidke's costume for the performance that sent her to the Eurovision Grand Final.
This podcast was affiliated with Arts Centre Melbourne presents The Dress and the Diva - from The Australian Museum of Performing Arts

Dan Brophy’s | Quit Your Day Job*
Gwendolynne Burkin is part of an exciting generation of Australian fashion designer that came up a the late 90s independent fashion boom time alongside alum such as Akira Isagowa and Lisa Gorman. But since then, a lot has changed in the Australian Fashion industry. Many of the names defined that period - how we dressed, what our high streets looked like, and the way Australian style was defined in the eyes of the world - have disappeared due to influences like highly competitive off-shore production, and inevitable defeat of online shopping by fast-fashion and overseas mega-brands. For Gwendolynne to still be in business 21 years later is a small miracle, due mainly to a series of creative business reinventions. I wanted to talk to Gwendolynne about what it was like coming up in that era of promise - and how she has managed to continuously adapt and evolve within her industry in order to do what she loves. This is a great episode for anyone who is looking to start their own business - especially one based around artisanal skill set. When you ARE 'the machine' at the centre of your business - how do you ensure that you are taking care of your biggest asset? For some creatives, neglecting wellbeing for the sake of heightened productivity may mean you are getting results at the cost of your health. You need to ensure you are supporting your passion - not just creatively but also physically, mentally, nutritionally and with rest. It's up to you to take care of your greatest asset.
